NOAA's 2026 Atlantic hurricane season outlook, updated in May, calls for a below-normal year — 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and a 55% chance the season stays below average overall. That's genuinely good news on paper. It's also not a landfall forecast, and NOAA says so explicitly: a "quiet" season on a national level says nothing about whether a storm hits your specific coastline. The season runs through November 30, with the historical peak still ahead — mid-September through October.
In plain terms: don't let a mild seasonal outlook talk you out of being ready. Here's what actually matters, organized by how much time you have.
Do This Now (Before Anything's in the Forecast)
This is the stuff that's genuinely hard to do once a storm is 72 hours out and everyone else in your region is trying to do the same thing at once.
- Test your backup power plan. If you have a generator or power station, actually run it — don't discover a dead battery or empty fuel tank during a real outage. If you don't have one yet, this is the time to size and buy, not during storm week when installers are booked out 8-12 weeks in hurricane-hit areas.
- Check your generator's fuel reserve. Propane tank topped off, or a plan for gas station runs before the storm — not during it, when lines form and stations run dry fast.
- Know your evacuation zone, if you're coastal. Not every hurricane requires evacuation, but knowing your zone in advance means you're not looking it up while roads are already filling.
- Review your homeowners insurance, specifically flood coverage (often separate from standard policies) and whether your policy notes a generator, which can qualify for a discount with some insurers.
When a Storm Is in the 5-Day Forecast
- Fill your vehicle's gas tank and any portable fuel containers you keep for a generator, before lines form.
- Charge everything — phones, power banks, and if you have a portable power station, top it off fully now.
- Fill water containers and, if you have one, your bathtub — utility disruptions can affect water pressure and safety even without direct storm damage.
- Secure or bring in outdoor furniture, grills, and anything that can become a projectile in high wind.
- Withdraw some cash. Card readers and ATMs don't work without power, and you may need cash for days.
24-48 Hours Before Landfall
- Run your generator briefly one more time to confirm it starts cleanly.
- Charge medical devices (CPAP batteries, mobility equipment) and confirm backup power can actually run them — check the wattage against what your generator or power station can deliver.
- Freeze water in empty space in your freezer. Extra ice mass keeps food safer longer if the outage extends past a day.
- Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings temporarily, so you start the outage as cold as possible.
- Confirm your generator placement is safe — never in a garage, breezeway, or near windows/doors, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide from a generator is a leading cause of hurricane-related deaths that have nothing to do with the storm itself.
During the Outage
- Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near an open window — full stop. This bears repeating because it's the single most common preventable hurricane-adjacent fatality.
- Keep the fridge and freezer closed as much as possible. A full freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours unopened; a half-full one for about 24.
- Ration power station/generator use for what actually matters — medical equipment and the fridge first, everything else after.
- Stay off downed power lines and assume every downed line is live, regardless of how it looks.
After Power Returns
- Let your generator cool before refueling, and don't run it dry between the storm and restoration if you can help it — a break-in period matters for engine longevity.
- Check freezer/fridge contents — when in doubt, throw it out, especially anything that was above 40°F for more than two hours.
- Document any storm damage with photos before cleanup, for insurance purposes.
