How to Prep for a Winter Storm Power Outage

Winter storms don't get the same media buildup as hurricanes, but they're statistically more dangerous: they kill more Americans annually than hurricanes, tornadoes, and lightning combined. Most of those deaths trace back to two preventable causes — carbon monoxide poisoning from improper heating or generator use, and traffic accidents. Neither has anything to do with the storm's severity; both come down to preparation.

Here's what actually matters, and why winter power outages are genuinely different from every other outage type on this site.

Why Winter Outages Are More Dangerous Than They Sound

A summer power outage is uncomfortable. A winter outage is a race against your home's temperature — and unlike food safety (measured in hours) or general inconvenience, extreme cold can become life-threatening within the same timeframe. Three things compound fast once the power and heat go out:

  1. Indoor temperature drops fast without a furnace or electric heat, especially in a poorly insulated home.
  2. Pipes can freeze and burst within hours in severe cold, and a burst pipe is expensive — during the 2021 Texas freeze, homes that had taken proactive pipe-protection steps saw zero pipe failures, while surrounding homes without that prep averaged $7,500 in damage each.
  3. The desperate response to cold is often the actual killer — carbon monoxide poisoning spikes roughly 70% during winter emergencies, almost entirely from generators run too close to the home or heating equipment never meant for indoor use.

Before Cold Weather Arrives

Weatherize now, not during a storm watch. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows, add storm windows or interior plastic sheeting, and insulate exposed pipes — especially any in unheated spaces like a garage, crawlspace, or exterior wall.

Know your main water shutoff valve location. If pipes do freeze, shutting off water immediately limits damage if something bursts once it thaws.

Test your generator now. Cold weather is genuinely harder on small engines — a generator that starts fine in October may struggle in a January cold snap if it hasn't been maintenance-checked. Run it under the manufacturer's recommended schedule (often weekly for standby units) so you're not discovering a starting problem during the actual emergency.

If you have a battery-based power station, know its cold-weather limits. Lithium battery capacity and charging speed both drop in cold temperatures — check your specific unit's rated operating range, and if possible, store or insulate it somewhere above freezing between uses rather than in an unheated garage.

When a Storm Is 12-48 Hours Out

  • Begin pipe protection when temperatures are forecast below 20°F — not after they've already hit freezing. That earlier timing is the single biggest factor separating homes that avoid burst pipes from ones that don't.
  • Let faucets drip slightly, especially any on exterior walls, to keep water moving through the pipe.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm room air reach the plumbing.
  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses, and shut off and drain outdoor spigots.
  • Fill your bathtub with water (for sanitation/flushing, not drinking) in case well-water pumps lose power.
  • Fully charge phones, power banks, and any battery-based backup power before the storm arrives.

The Single Most Important Safety Rule

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or within 20 feet of doors, windows, or vents — even with the garage door open. Point exhaust away from the house. This is worth repeating because the desperation to stay warm during a real cold-weather emergency is exactly when people make this mistake — install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, and if anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, or weak while a generator is running, get outside immediately.

Equally important: never use a gas grill, camp stove, or a heater not explicitly rated for indoor use as an indoor heat source. These generate carbon monoxide just as dangerously as a generator does.

During the Outage

  • Close doors to unused rooms and place towels along the bottom to trap heat where you actually need it.
  • Cover windows with blankets or sheets at night to cut heat loss.
  • Dress in layers rather than relying entirely on space heating.
  • If pipes do freeze: shut off the water main immediately, open the affected faucet to relieve pressure as it thaws, and use a hair dryer or space heater (never an open flame) starting from the faucet end and working toward the frozen section.
  • Don't travel unless it's a true emergency. Traffic accidents are one of the two leading causes of winter storm deaths — most outage-related trips can wait.
